Our diabetic outreach and education program promotes healthy lifestyles for people who are blind or visually impaired and need to learn adaptive techniques for managing their diabetic conditions. We have a certified diabetic educator who works with people by using devices such as talking glucometers to test blood sugar levels and magnifiers to measure insulin for injections. The program encourages people to make better food choices, monitor weight control, exercise and stay active, take mediation on a timely basis and reduce health risks to maintain healthy sugar levels, all important factors for those living with diabetes.
Besides one on one counseling, we also offer two group education opportunities:
We host a six-week educational group that meets weekly at INSIGHT and features presentations from our diabetic educator, guest speakers, as well as the opportunity to learn from others in the group. Our next series will be held in September.
We also host a monthly workshop series that features presentations on topics related to diabetes. The presentations are free, open to the public, and held at INSIGHT on the first Tuesday of every month from 1PM - 2:30PM. Upcoming workshops include:
- August 2nd: Diabetes Medications: What Works and What's New with registered pharmacist Lynne Tashiro
- September 6th: Managing Stress with Tai Chi presented by Dr. Peter DeBlasio
